Begur

An enchanting town with beaches straight from paradise

1.5 kilometres from Càmping Begur

The municipality of Begur on the Costa Brava has a long history. The mediaeval castle, which stands above the town of Begur, was built to defend it during the Moorish invasion and, although it was almost destroyed in 1920, it is now the most iconic image of Begur. The defensive towers that were used to look out for pirates along the coast in the 16th century also remain. We should also highlight the stately and beautiful colonial houses built by the “Indians” (people from Begur who went to seek their fortunes in the Americas in the late 19th century, fleeing from the economic crisis at that time).

The main traditional activities in the municipality of Begur were fishing, the cork industry and collecting coral. Begur is clearly distinguished for its fishing tradition. Several of the beaches and coves were previously fishermen’s neighbourhoods but have now become tourist attractions, such as Sa Riera, Sa Tuna and Aiguafreda.

Despite the fact that Begur’s population increases tenfold in summer, it has conserved its seafaring character, its labyrinth of streets and its family businesses.

La Costa Brava

158 kilometres of beaches

The Costa Brava forms the eastern border of the province of Girona. It has 158 linear kilometres of coastline. The name Costa Brava, “Wild Coast” in English, is an attempt to describe the rough and wild landscape combining the dark green of the pine groves and the rocks, the golden sand and the deep blue of the Mediterranean.

The Costa Brava stretches from Portbou to the town of Blanes, and Cap de Creus, the Medes Islands and the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Parks, towns such as Cadaqués, Pals and Empúries (with its ruins) and coves such as those in Begur and Llafranc (with the famous St. Sebastian lighthouse) are all to be found here. In short, an exceptional coastline.
